How do I take my measurements?
How do I select the appropriate size?
- Watch our video here and check out our guide for how to take measurements yourself.
- Check out the designer’s size chart found on each dress page and compare where your measurements are falling. Usually you’ll want to order the size that corresponds with your largest measurement.
- Ask style consultant for some advice. She knows a thing or two about fit, style and the construction of our entire collection. Our style consultants can recommend a size but they cannot guarantee fit.
- Give our Try at Home Box program a shot! Try on dresses in our collection in the comfort of your own home, on your own time. Learn more about it here.
I’m between sizes, what do you suggest?
If you are between sizes, we’d recommend that you order the size that will accommodate the tightest or most fitting part of the dress. For most dresses, this will be either the bust or the waist. If the dress is form fitted or the lining is slim, the hips could be the most fitted part of the dress. Plan on having your dress tailored for the perfect fit.
What alterations should I expect?
Depending on your height and the shoes you plan to wear, almost all dresses require a hem adjustment, even with extra length added. Adjustments to the fit of the bodice, whether that’s up towards the bustline or in the waistline are common as we often fall into one size in the bust and another in the waist (or vice versa). If your dress has straps or sleeves it is likely you’ll need those adjusted to your shoulder height.
Why do bridesmaid dresses need alterations?
You are going to be in someone’s wedding pictures, hanging on their living room wall for years and years, so fundamentally, this dress needs to fit you well! As a formal garment, bridesmaid dresses tend to lack the spandex and stretchy materials that make dresses we buy off the rack fit our bodies easily. A tailor’s extra nips and tucks are what make them special. Also keep in mind that in any dress, the best size for your bust may not be the best size for your hips or waist. We suggest that you order the size that accommodates your largest measurement and see a tailor for the adjustments.
Do I need extra length?
If you’re taller than 5’7” and planning on wearing a heel we advise adding extra length to your dress. Although this will often add more than you’ll need (usually between 3”-5”) it will allow you the extra length to wear the shoe height of your choice. Yes, you’ll likely still need it hemmed but this way it’s not too short to begin with! (Note: Not all dresses are available with extra length. Standard lengths and extra length measurements change from designer to designer.
I’m expecting! Or hoping to be! What do I do?
Amazing! Congratulations! The style and size you should order depends on how far along you’ll be at the wedding.. We’ve done this a thousand times but it remains a very personal decision. We can help you think this through. But come to terms with the fact that you will need alterations. If there is a maternity style available in your color/designer, we say go for it. These are cut with ample room for growth in the belly, making it much easier to fit and tailor down the line. You know your body better than anyone so we’ll defer to your judgment on what size to order but we are here to make sure that you are asking all the right questions and considering all nuances.
My brideside stylist recommended a size I don’t agree with, what do I do?
You know your body best! We’re here to help you order whichever size you’d like. Keep in mind that each style fits a bit differently and each designer has their own size chart. Also don’t forget that it’s much easier taking in a dress that’s a little roomy than trying to crash diet or squeeze into a dress that is too small. Depending on the designer's production time frame we may not have time to exchange your dress for another size should it not fit.
Do you have recommended tailors?
All bridesmaid dresses are made to be tailored as they require some adjustments for that perfect fit. We recommend you use your local dry cleaner for basic alterations, just ask if they do special occasion. Check YELP! for sewing & alterations within your zip code to find tailors near you. For local Chicago/Charlotte/NYC recommendations, reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org
How much do alterations cost?
Prices are set by the tailor, so the costs associated with standard alterations can range per location. Depending on the fabric and number of layers your adjustments could vary in cost. Brideside does not contribute funds toward alterations.
What does cut-to-order mean?
Cut to order (and special order) are manufacturing and production terms. They mean that the dress you want will be made after you choose to order it - they are not hanging in stock in a warehouse. Depending on which designer you’re wearing this time frame can be anywhere from 6-16 weeks. The 6-16 week period we quote is the time it takes from beginning to end – cutting the pattern from a bolt of fabric, making the dress and all the steps in between to get it to you.
Can I exchange my dress for a size up/down?
Brideside cannot process exchanges due to the special order nature of this product. (See the question “What does cut to order mean?” for some additional details). Order your dress with ample time before the big day to give yourself room for necessary alterations and styling.
